Computer Science

“Our national competitiveness depends upon our ability to educate our children in the critical field of computer science.” – Cheryl Sandberg, Chief Operating Officer, Facebook

Designed to equip our students with the tangible skills they will need to thrive in a world where the next generation of jobs will require a keen understanding of the technology involved in nearly all innovation, our computer science program is an integral part of our curriculum beginning in the Nest and extending through grade 8.

As toddlers our students work with multi-step directions to “program” a human robot (sometimes even our Head of School, Mr. Davies!) to travel across a large grid in the classroom. As they giggle at their robot’s progress, students practice using logic to guide their “device” to its target. By Pre-K, students experience working with Cod-a-Pillers, WeBots and ProBots, further developing their understanding of programming while working with age-appropriate devices.

In our elementary school, students learn to program complex Lego EV3 and Mindstorm devices to compete in Lego League competitions. Each week elementary students complete challenges on a variety of coding platforms including Kodable, Artist, Scratch, and Lego EV3. After school many students participate in the “Tech Time” Club where they create stop-animation videos, program Lego robots, create video games, explore graphic design and much more.

From advanced coding to robotics, computer science explodes with opportunity at the middle school level. Our “bring your own device” (BYOD) technology paradigm enables students to engage technology that supports their learning across all academic disciplines. Students delve deeper into our computer science curriculum via elective courses such as: Lego robotics, app development, touch design, coding, design thinking, 3D printing, and graphic design.
